Modernist designer, Gerhard Herbst translates sculptural form into the jewelry medium. Popularly known for his spatial shapes and fluid manipulations of metal, Herbst began producing his unique style of jewelry in 1975. Herbst then studied both sculpture and jewelry design at San Diego State University, and after graduating Herbst established his  studio practice in Ocean Beach California. After many successful years in California, Herbst subsequently relocated his family to Australia and he now operates his jewellery business out of his studio in Noosaville Queensland.

Traditionally trained in the metalsmithing arts, Gerhard Herbst draws inspiration from mid century Scandinavian metalwork and the work of Alexander Calder. Working primarily from flat sterling sheet and wire, Gerhard individually forges and hammers his forms simultaneously stretching and compressing the material to create superior flex, strength, and temper in his work. It is these unique structural properties that allows Gerhard to produce the spatial sculptural forms and curvilinear shapes which feature most predominately in his work.

Today Gerhard has become a leading jewelry designer and he exhibits and sells his pieces in the finest jewellery stores and craft galleries through out Australia New Zealand and North America.
